THE MARCHE REGION
The location chosen for the first TRISKEL RESORT is in the Marche region, which enjoys some of the highest life expectancy figures in the world.
It also leads other regions in terms of “active ageing”, having created and supported the i-Live cluster (Intelligence Technologies for Independent Living and Eco-sustainability) and being the location of the prestigious INRCA Institute for scientific research into old age in Ancona, not to mention its excellent hospitals such as that at Torrette di Ancona.
Other key factors were the fact that the countryside remains relatively unspoilt – compared to other regions – due to the slow spread of communication networks in the last century, and the authentic, wholesome character of the people and its agricultural produce.
It is perhaps no coincidence that when the American magazine AARP – which has 36 million retired subscribers – published a list of the best places in the world to live, for pensioners, the Marche region was included in the top five.
The village of Poggio San Marcello, an old, medieval settlement – with a very small population – that has remained largely untouched by industrial development, offered the ideal location. It enjoys a hilltop position 400m above sea level with magnificent views of the Sibillini Mountains, the bell towers of other hilltop settlements, and the Adriatic coast. The village, which is twinned with Medjugorje, offered another key advantage: its beautiful 13th-century, Romanesque-Benedictine church. Not only will the church serve as an events venue, the adjoining rectory will provide the resort with an, atmospheric and welcoming reception area for its Guests, who will be warmly received with a herbal tea and a homemade pastry while they are led through the registration process.
The TRISKEL RESORT aspires to a new model of accommodation for older people, which could be replicated with franchises in specific locations in Italy and abroad offering Guests the same atmosphere and standard of service. Guests will also have the opportunity to exchange residences via a system coordinated by TRISKEL RESORTS itself.
POGGIO SAN MARCELLO, TWINNED WITH MEDJUGORJE
Poggio San Marcello was officially twinned with the Čitluk-Medjugorje municipality in Bosnia and Herzegovina, on 15 May 2005. This agreement is designed to establish enduring cultural, touristic-religious and socio-economic connections between the two towns.
MARCHE, THE CULTURE OF A REGION
The Marche region is a living museum, an ocean of cultivated hillsides and valleys that stretch from the Adriatic to the Apennines, punctuated by a network of villages, towns and cities brimming with theatres, history and art – including masterpieces by Piero della Francesca, Lorenzo Lotto, Rubens and Titian – and ancient Roman roads. A region that, above all, values its culture, culture that over the millennia has been internalised by the population, finding expression in their approach to life and work and in the products of the region’s businesses and industries.
THE SEA
No less than 80% of the region’s coast has been approved by the F.E.E., the body that provides environmental oversight of Europe’s coastal areas and official recognition of water quality, services, safety standards and environmental sustainability. As such, the Marche region is second only to Liguria.
THE FOOD AND WINE OF THE MARCHE REGION
The Triskel Resort will be pleased to offer tours of the local area’s best producers and suppliers of food and wine, offering an opportunity to discover – and sample – the finest and most iconic products that the Marche region has to offer: Verdicchio wine from the Jesi and Matelica hills, the famous Rosso Conero and Lacrima di Morro d’Alba, the red wine of Piceno and the Vernaccia of Serrapetrona, plus spirits and liqueurs, honey, oil, local meats, pasta, cheeses and much more besides.
